This is my second semester taking ceramics, as I took ceramics one in the fall of last year. I did not wheel throw too much last year, because I did not have the skills/experience. However, now that I have acquired the skills to do so in ceramics two, I decided to hone those skills by creating a dinner set consisting of three chalices, three bowls, and a gravy boat. For my bowls, I threw them on the wheel, then trimmed them. For the chalices I threw the bottom stem, threw the cup on the top, and combined them together via score and slip on the wheel. Finally for my gravy boat, I threw a cylindrical form and then hand-pressed the sides together and formed a spout. I glazed my pieces with three coats of Celadon Textured Turquoise to give them a natural and moving color feel. I sought out to create a functioning dinner set because my family is constantly losing silverware and I wanted to provide us with something that we can use regularly. I feel as though my set represents my increased skill level and a culmination of my growth throughout the semester. I plan to continue my ceramics education through the studio workshop class next year.
